No problem. :) I hope they can at least save the remainder of the chicks. If not, just know that the first clutch isn't always successful. They could most likely have much better luck, in the next one.

I personally wouldn't take a risk of handfeeding such a tiny newborn creatures.

Which is why it's usually described as a solution for the worst-case scenario. I would suggest trying the other solutions first (make sure it's not too cold, don't check on them too often, increase cage size if it's too small, place cage in quieter room).

I fear that if it happened to be a worst case scenario though, it would possibly be too late for any remaining chicks.

It's up to them to make the judgment call, though, whether they should treat it as worst-case, or if they should see if the easier solutions would work.

Sometimes the choice is between handfeeding and letting the chick die because the parents won't take care of it. Handfeeding a day one chick is risky with cockatiels because they are so tiny, and it must be even harder with a day one finch. But sometimes it's the only chance for survival that the baby has. Even if you aspirate the chick the results are no worse than they would have been otherwise. At least it's a quicker end than starving to death.

Some people believe in doing everything they can to save a chick, and others believe in letting nature take its course. It's a personal choice, and not an easy one to make.

For some people, it's a matter of experience. I mean, I would allow nature take its course just because I don't know how to deal with very young chicks. Oh well.. maybe I would try, as I have had a bit of handfeeding experience.

The topic starter's wife shared with me that there are 3 survivors at the moment who seem to be doing good. What is an average clutch size for them?

The internet says they can lay up to 8 eggs but 3 to 6 is more typical. Maybe the new parents didn't know how to cope with a large clutch but can handle three. Or maybe it took them a while to figure out what they were supposed to do and that's why the earlier babies were lost. I don't have any finch experience, but I know that with parrots it's common for new parents to have problems in the beginning but then their instincts eventually kick in.

Zebra finches naturally lay up to 8 eggs. Since they did lay eight, and eight eggs hatched in total, they had a 100% hatch-rate. :) How much will survive, can commonly depend on cage size. Like I said before, they will let chicks die, if the cage is too small, to prevent crowding.

That's good that they're surviving now. :) What are they doing differently? Whatever it is, keep it up, and they'll have better chance of survival. If they're still doing everything the same, that's ok, but it would still be a good idea to just keep conscious of how much they check on them, and for how long. It's common for birds in general to get stressed out, if someone is watching their nest. Just try to minimum activity levels in said room, make sure they feel as safe as possible. Just little things to help ensure chick's survival. :)

this is very, very interesting.
I guess cockatiels don't worry for the cage size at all. At least my birds didn't

Indeed. Parrots don't seem to have that kind of concern, though sometimes I wonder if it's because they're able to climb. Finches rely solely on flight (except when they're on the ground, then they hop for short distances), and it would be a little difficult to fly in a really crowded cage. They're very high-energy little birds.
