I think Australia is pretty conservation-conscious, which is why they outlawed the export of their parrots in the first place. But some species are so abundant that they're a nuisance in some areas, including the galah. It wouldn't threaten the wild species if they allowed limited exports of these birds. I wouldn't expect them to allow the export of species that are rare and/or endangered.

Galahs and tiels and othr parrots were commonly taken wild from the nest and hand reared as pets but none of that is allowed now unfortunately. i understand stopping this for the less abundant species, but our corellas really are a pest in some areas. Where crops are planted you see massive flocks that turn paddocks white while they go foraging for the sown grains. Farmers hate them. Both corella and galahs are shocking chewers and destroy power lines in some areas so relocation programs have been put in place.
We have populations of rainbow lorikeets which were released and established many years ago that are now competing with our less aggressive species for food and nesting places, but I love hearing them in the treetops in the perth area.
