Hello, thanks for having me in your group. I live in Western Australia in a small rural community about 90kms from Perth. I keep cockatiels mostly for pleasure and have a breeding plan which aims to have attractive robust birds with outstanding temperament. Currently I have 19 adults and 6 chicks. Most of my birds live in outside aviaries but I always have a few either chicks I am handfeeding or adults for a bit of tlc inside. I am always trying to learn more about these birds especially genetics but I find all aspects of bird husbandry interesting.

Welcome to the forum! :) I'd love to see your cockatiels, if you have any for us.

There are some articles on genetics, on the main website, so I suggest taking a look at them. :) If there's anything that confuses you though, you can just ask Carolyn (tielfan), since she wrote said articles. She knows a thing or two about genetics and color mutations. ;)

I'm still learning about it as well, though I could possibly share some of my knowledge. I'm better in the behavioral department of cockatiels (though there are things I'm learning still, but I've learned a lot already, from experience).

You're in Australia? Do any wild flocks of cockatiels ever bug your aviary tiels? That's always something I've been curious about, when keeping cockatiels outside in Australia, though I understand that some parts don't have wild cockatiels.

I wish I had wild tiels visiting but they are not in my area, plenty of galahs and port lincoln parrots. From what I have learned so far a bird from wild parents would be ideal to mate with our pampered mutated pets

Bringing in some fresh wildtype genes would be beneficial. Some serious cockatiel breeders are currently developing strains of pure normal greys with no splits, to be used to enhance the gene pool of rare mutations. It's the closest we can get to the pure wildtype bird.

If you haven't done so already, feel free to vote in our August picture contests! We could use a tiebreaker lol.
