I was using a twist tie to secure the grate in Kermit’s carrier, and cutting the extra length off. Kermit was on the floor, and I didn’t realize there were pieces of twist tie next to me. I look up, and Kermit has one of the pieces in his mouth! I don’t know how long he was chewing on it before I saw him. I leaned up and he started flying in a panic, still with the twist tie in his beak. I managed to get him in his cage, and by that time he dropped it. I don’t know if he ingested any of it or not. I’m guessing the wire in the middle is toxic to birds, right? This happened a few minutes ago. Should I bring Kermit to the vet?

Did he break the twist tie while he was chewing on it? If he didn't break it, then it's unlikely that he ate any of it. I'm sure that the metal in the wire isn't anything that's good for birds, but the risk of internal injury from sharp pieces of wire might be a bigger hazard.

If you think he might have eaten some of it you should call your vet and ask for advice. If it doesn't look like he ate it then there probably isn't a problem. It probably isn't a big deal if he ate some little bits of plastic or paper off of the twist tie, it's the actual wire that's the main hazard.

I’m really not sure if he broke the twist tie or exposed the wire. He probably could have. I wasn’t even able to locate it because he dropped it while in flight, so it could be anywhere in the room. He’s not showing any symptoms, and he appears fine.

He was probably just beaking it and didn't eat anything dangerous. This is what birds usually due when they get hold of a twist tie, but every now and then there might be a bird that actually eats it.

If you want to give him something safer to chew on, give him a clean twig from a bird-safe tree or a clean blade of grass from the lawn. He was probably chewing on the twist tie because it reminded him of those things.

try a zip tie or a clip from walmart they sell metal ones for 2$ and plastic for 1$

I don’t think I would trust cheap metals from Walmart. They may be toxic to birds. I would prefer the plastic.

I did end up replacing the twist ties with zip ties. That way it would be safe if Kermit chewed on them.
