I've only just seen your post on this topic Barbara...
Drummer the tiel I've had for around 5 years, found by the river, we think he is an old bird...
Avian vet cant tell me!
I've had to adapt his cage, around the perches I've found that pipe covers, (go around water pipes, ect. ) they are padded and soft... I've covered Drummers perches with these...
Drums has very bad feet and cant walk well, cant fly much, is a very happy bird. whistles and sings much of the time... I've had to put him into a smaller cage than I like for my tiels, as his balance isn't good.

Jan, I had no idea that Drummer had a foot problem too! I am very sorry, but he's obviously in good hands.
I have been trying to find these pipe covers, looked in B&Q catalogue but they don't have anything like that.
Could you show me a picture, if you find it, online so that I know what I need to look for? It sounds a much better solution than mine.

Could you use staples or small nails to attach it to the perch?

The staples are worth a try! He doesn't chew on the perches and anyway the staples would be in the bottom side, he surely wouldn't be able to reach them.
The material is a bit stiff so I doubt glueing it would be an easy job.

Thank you both for the suggestions!

Charlie is not a happy bird, at the moment. He would spend all his time with Paul but Paul works a lot and when he's at home he doesn't have the patience to sit with him for hours; I don't blame him at all, he's not bird-orientated, plus this is my probem and I can't expect him to solve it.
Charlie is still wary of the other tiels and they don't take much notice of him... I wish one of them would become his special friend!
I do what I can but he really doesn't like me a lot, prefers to sit high somewhere and basically do nothing...
I will start the new cage project as soon as possible and put some non-scary toys there, he likes to chew strings, little twigs, I will try introducing those slowly and see what happens.

Home Depot calls it pipe insulation: http://www.homedepot.com/b/Plumbing-Pip ... 5yc1vZbuy9 Some types are very easy for birds to chew up, so you need to be careful what kind you get.
