so after the suspected metal poisoning, im wondering, are the bird toy petstore bells safe? like the ones on a lot of bird toys at most petstores, by activitoys and prevue hendryx especially. or would these be risky? theres some toys with coloured bells too, not jingle bells, theyre bird toys too.

just want some insight on that as munch LOVES bells and i feel bad she doesnt have a favourite toy.

The biggest issue with bird-toy bells is the fear that the bird will eat the clapper. This mostly applies to big birds and small bells, not small birds like lovies and cockatiels. With jingle bells there's a risk that the bird's tongue will get caught in the slit, but I don't think there's much risk with small birds because I don't think they have the strength to force their tongue inside. I haven't heard any complaints about the metal used in the bells.

so you think its safe then?

If a bird was spending a lot of time chewing on a bell I would get worried and take it out, especially if there was any damage to the finish. Otherwise I think it's safe.

I don't think there's anything wrong with oil spray for pans as long as you're not using it so close to the birds that aerosolized particles could land on their feathers or be inhaled. If they're at least five feet away I doubt that anything could reach them. This is oil after all, it doesn't exactly waft away on the lightest breeze.

good to know, my birds arent ever in the kitchen, especially when cooking. but some people say that they are toxic to use in a household with birds. good to know thats not true.

as for the bell, i have a nickel plated bell, munch likes to grab them and beat them up. if i notice excessive chewing or damage i will definately remove it.

When I hang bells from these links, the tiels would rather chew on the links than on the bells: http://www.ebay.com/itm/WTBT-Bird-Toy-P ... 0562190605 Especially the yellow ones, my guys are attracted to yellow for some reason. Buster will sit for a long time holding one in his beak, almost like he's sucking on it.

They're also fond of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/WTBT-Bird-Toy-P ... 0504650952

The ebay seller used to call these items cockatiel links and cockatiel charms. The links might not stand up to lovebird abuse and even the cockatiels have broken a few by chewing on them, but the charms are thicker and stronger.
