My friend came over and she wanted to hold the one of my baby cockatiels. After about 2 minutes, I looked to see what my budgies were doing, then all of a sudden, I hear a "thump". I turn around, and I see that my baby is laying on the ground. MY FRIEND DROPPED MY BABY BIRD! And all she said was :oopssign:! What do I do?

Is the bird alive? If so, you can put him back in the nest.

If not, I'm so sorry for your loss! It must be hard to loose a baby when you were trying to be kind to someone else.

When someone wants to hold my babies, I watch them like a hawk. lol

The baby is still alive, but it is not moving very much. What should I do? Is there anything I can do?

If you have access to an avian vet you should call them and ask for advice. Unfortunately it's possible that the baby has been injured, and depending on the damage I don't know whether a vet could help it or not.

Otherwise the only thing I can think of is to try to feed him a drop of electrolyte solution to give him more energy. Keep him warm too. If he's strong enough to beg for food the parents will feed him, but otherwise it won't go well even if he's not really hurt. It's very easy to aspirate a tiny baby so you want to just carefully dribble a small drop on the side of the beak and let him do the rest. This article has info on assist feeding: http://www.internationalcockatielresour ... hicks.html It's aimed at cockatiels but should work for budgies too.

Baby birds tend to make sudden random movements so it can be hard to hold onto them unless you're very very careful. When taking them out of the nest to look at them, it's best to keep one hand cupped on top of them until you have your bottom hand resting on a steady surface, like a table top or a mattress. You still have to be careful, but if your hand is resting on a solid surface and not close to the edge, the baby won't fall very far if it gets away from you.

I hope the baby will be all right. Babies are very fragile and don't have much control over their own movements, so we have to be super careful with them.

Has there been any change in the situation? Please keep us informed of what's going on, because we care. I hope it will turn out well.

The baby is doing better, but I noticed something. The crop doesn't seem to be as full. Thanks for everyone's support! :thanks:

The crop size will vary depending on how recently the parents fed the baby. If you have a scale that weighs in grams, you can check his weight daily to make sure his growth rate is OK. I'm glad he's doing better! Does his energy level seem OK?
