Maybe his previous loving owner was a man, so he prefers males. Keep doing nice things for him and he'll come to love you too!

Custom-building a cage for him is a good idea because then you can give him exactly what he needs. Of course you'll need to observe him a little longer to be sure of what he needs. A solid floor surface instead of a grate is probably a good idea.

His flying skills may improve as he gets more exercise. He probably didn't get many opportunities to fly when he was with the uncaring heirs. I can tell you from personal experience - when you get older you lose muscle strength faster when you don't exercise than you do when you're young!

That's brilliant! I think that'd exactly why he chose your hubby over you.

I agree that showing him that women can be just as great as men can. With patients, anything can happen :)

Today I took Charlie to the vet because his lack of balance was worrying me.
Dr Brian is a saint, the thorough visit and nail clipping cost me £6, and he is a bird owner himself so he knows what he's talking about.
It's not very good news for Charlie. I was expecting an age related arthritis but instead he has a spine injury. It's not recent, since he has learned to cope with his limitations and the feet show signs of wear due to the way he walks.
The vet says that he doesn't seem in pain but there is nothing, medication wise or other, that can be done to make his condition better.
He hasn't got complete control over his claws and his wings, the good news is that since he has been like that for a long time he has learned to cope and know his limits.

At this point I need to completely rethink his cage and playpen. He doesn't like to walk on fabric because, due to the lack of control over the feet, he can't free his nails if they get stuck in the fabric.
If any of you know of a similar case, please let me know so that I can compare notes with the owner.
I am gonna search online for a setup that can help, I was thinking maybe a wooden grate on the bottom of the cage could help him to move better and should be easier for him to use his beak too, since it is basically the only "leg" that works well.

Oh I'm sorry about the spine injury :(

I wonder how he injured it. I'm glad he got used to it. He sounds like a very good boy.

Please keep us posted on your search for a new set up. Your such a good mommy!

Maybe a wooden grate on the bottom of the cage with narrow slats (a half inch to an inch wide) and narrower spaces between the slats (a quarter inch or less). It would be easy for him to reach a space that he could grab the edge with his beak, but the spaces wouldn't be so wide that his feet would fall into them.

Probably he crashed into a wall, or he was stomped on... it's horrific just thinking of it

Do you think he would like a cholla perch? The little holes are easy to grasp. From http://www.thingsforwings.ca/Fork-Choll ... _1381.html :
