Rocko and Loki have never ever had night frights but Loki has had 2 she had one a few days ago she wasn't harmed and I was awake when it happened so I was able to switch on the lights and calm her down and Rocko because if she is flying all over the cage its gonna cause Rocko to do the same and he could get injured too.Well just a few minutes ago she had a night fright and she and Rocko was flying all over the cage and just now I found a tail feather at the bottom of the cage and now today I just watched one of Manda & Rio's videos on Moulting and she was talking about feathers and stuff and well I examined Loki's tail feather and squeezed the shaft and blood came out so its a fresh feather that just came out from her night fright.I checked her and there isn't any blood coming from her.I know night frights are common with cockatiels so what can I do to prevent it happening? And why exactly do Night Frights happen?

Night frights are often caused, because they can see something moving, in the middle of the night. However, they don't see as well in the dark as we can. So any slight shift or anything can set them off. Some have it worse than others, some are ok. Cover up the cage when they go to bed. That way, they won't be seeing any shifting shadows, or whatever it is that is causing Loki to have them, and the chances of it happening are less likely.

Thanks I read about moving things and there is a mouse in my bedroom I always hear it and sometimes I hear it moving around my bedroom so maybe thats what causes Loki's night frights.I never cover the cages but I did the other day because there was a very loud windy storm.

Odd sounds can cause night frights too, or anything that makes them think a predator might be in the area. Whenever I go into the bird room at night, I tell them "it's me", because if I move around quietly trying not to disturb them I'm likely to set off a night fright. If you've got a mouse running around in there, that's probably what's scaring them. They can tell something is nearby but they don't know what it is.

Get rid of the mouse!
Is it a pet or wild one?

Well, you might want to try and remove them, then. They have diseases that can potentially be spread to the birds.

We already have traps and mouse poison spread out I think I could smell a dead one today somewhere I could smell it when the heating came on

Just make sure the birds don't get in the rat poison, then. It can kill them too
