Using food coloring as a dye is safe for birds.

It's safe but the color isn't permanent. If the leash gets wet the color will come out. You'll have little blue puddles where the drips land.

Is there anything permanent thats bird safe? I suppose if I use food colouring I can always wash it out to get it back to the original colour.

Dyes for clothing would be safe after they've dried. You'd need to watch out for smells etc while you were actually dyeing the leash. But after it's dry it would basically be the same as the coloring that's in their flight suits and your shirts.

You might not get the results you were expecting though since you're trying to cover up an existing color not adding color to something that's plain white. I've never used dyes but I don't think they work that way, and you'd probably end up with a blended color instead of replacing the old color with blue. You're more likely to end up with shades of brown than the color you want. Sort of like coloring something with a marker and then coloring on top of it with a different marker.

Where can you get dye for clothing.Would food colouring be the same or would it actually dye blue over an existing colour.

Food coloring is weaker than clothing dye so it would be even less likely to cover up the color you don't want. If you went for black instead of blue you shouldn't have any problems getting the color that you're aiming for.

I'm not sure which stores would have it in Ireland. In the US you can get it at craft stores. Probably some other places too, but I haven't looked for it. Rit is the name of a popular brand. Here's what the box looks like.
