My birds are in danger!

I'm sorry to report I lost 2 cockatiels and a budgy already. I think it's rats!

I've put out several traps to catch the rats alive, but have been unsuccesfull to catch any.

Last week I opted to put out other traps (that will kill the rats) but to no avail.

I'm beginning to wonder if I need to lay out poison of call in a professional exterminator.

Eek! Rats are very dangerous. Do you have a dog or cat that you can put on patrol?

Do rats actually kill birds? (I mean do they kill them on direct contact)? This is horrible :(

I would move all birds to a different area and then treat their aviaries. Poison or exterminator - you will need to get more info about both methods

So sorry to hear it and good luck!

Yes, rats will kill or injure birds. I once saw a cockatiel at a pet shop that only had one wing because one of the rats at the shop escaped from its cage during the night and tore the bird's wing off. The rat probably would have killed the bird if it was able to reach it better.

I would normally do this too, but since the birds are all on eggs I don't dare move them.

I have not yet seen an actual rat, but I'm pretty sure they are there... Have contacted an exterminator and am awaiting their advice/price.

How does the rat get into the bird cage?

In an aviary, they can often find a way to dig a tunnel under the walls. Or make a hole in the wall and go through that. Sometimes animals (including hawks and raccoons, not just rats) will kill a bird by sticking a leg through the wire and grabbing the bird. They can't get the whole bird out that way, but they can get enough pieces to make it worth the effort. I assume that this is how the rat in the pet shop managed to take the cockatiel's wing off.

I see. It can be a rough life. It hurts when something you love is seen by another being as only a meal. I remember others on the forum who have had similar losses. I am so thankful it hasn't happened to any of my birds.
