several birds were sitting on top of an open door and my daughter closed it (there is a towel on the top of the door so she thankfully didn't close it all the way). One of the birds completely missing her tail... they are all flying loose. She is flying with the rest of them... not sure how much OK or not OK she is. I will have to look later when she is in the cage. Do you think she is badly injured?

I picked up 9 long feathers from the floor where it happened. They look like normal feathers that I find from time to time.

She's probably not hurt at all. Birds can release their tail feathers when they want to, to help them escape from a predator that's grabbed them by the tail. Her tail feathers probably got tugged on when the door was closing, so she dropped them.

thank you. I can see that she is more quiet than normal. Probably still scared and stressed. She preens but that's it. I saw her going to eat but it was very brief. I will hope she is back to normal soon. This is my dear cinnamon girl that was in trouble once long ago when she probably had a concussion. She is so precious. It hurts to see her with no tail.

If there's no blood on the quills then there was probably no pain when the feathers came out. If she acts like the flesh part of the tail is injured then it's possible that it got pinched in the door. But if she acts like it's OK then there probably isn't a problem. I hope she's back to normal in the morning!

there is no blood. I think she is getting back to her playful self.

Oh, that must have been hard. It really hurts when you feel your bird has been injured.
Silver was on top of a door and somehow I didn't know he was there, but he squawked, so I didn't close it all the way. He had a little red spot on his foot. I felt SO bad.
I am sure your tiel is going to be okay.

thanks Diane I think a bird can be injured real bad if gets caught in the door. I think I read previously that somebodys bird had to have a leg amputated because of such accident. Is this true that she will get new tail feathers only with the next molt? this seems like a long time to wait!

She should start regrowing the new tailfeathers immediately. It's like she molted them all at the same time. It'll probably take about a month for her tail to look normal again.

She is growing her little adorable tail ! what is interesting is that new feathers aren't solid but more like Stella's pattern (Stella is cinnamon pearl , and the bird that is missing her tail is cinnamon pied - clone of a baby bird that Carolyn posted some time ago)
