I use raw buckwheat in the shell for the seed mix. I get it from a feed store that specializes in bird seed.

I also serve lightly sprouted grains every morning. There's a little bit of raw buckwheat without the shell in this. I get it from a natural-foods grocery store.

My birds don't care for cooked food so pretty much everything they get is raw. They do like popcorn so they get a little of that once in a while. I pop it in the microwave - no oil or salt.

If you like you can try to pop the millet. Not the millet in the seed mix, you need to get the millet for humans, I am sure your shop has it. It pops at high temperatures just like the normal popcorn, I confess I eat it too, it's delish.
Maybe the mushy cooked buckwheat can be used as base for birdy bread, did you try that Jan?

How do you pop the millet? I've been trying to do it and it's not working. The recommended online method is to shake it in a pan over medium low heat. I tried popping it in the microwave too (that's how I make bird popcorn) but that didn't work either.

I bought it already made when I ordered that mega grocery of organic grains online, and after seeing it... And checking that it tastes delicious, I have checked online and seen that it's possible to make your own. I still have the bought one so I didn't try myself, but if you did and failed I suspect that maybe we need really high temperatures. I have the address of the producers and I am going to send them an email asking for an explanation of the method.
