Sorry I'm flooding the forum up, but I have new questions as time goes on. I walked in and found Poppy soaked from the belly down. He fell in his water dish. He didn't panic, and climbed right out after kicking his feet a bit. I saw him trying to get onto his food dish and he got frustrated and didn't try again. At the moment, I just don't want him to drown himself since he's so clumsy.

This is his quarantine cage.

The dishes are just standard, but I'm starting to think it's too difficult for him to use.

Babies learn foraging-style eating more easily than eating from a bowl. He'll learn quickly, but for a few days you might want to provide some alternate eating places. You could take the grate out of the cage and spread some food on the floor along with a water dish that's relatively wide and shallow (so he can wade in it and drink while he's wading). Or you could spread some newspaper on top of the grate to make a solid floor and do the same thing, or put stuff directly on top of the grate. He'll probably drop a lot of food through the grate though if there's nothing to stop it from falling through.

You can also hang up leafy greens and millet spray for him to eat.

The skills that our older birds have seem very normal and natural, but babies don't know ANY of this stuff when they leave the nest. In the beginning they struggle just to stand on a perch without falling off. Little Poppie has a lot to learn but he'll gain the skills with a little practice.

Yes put a grid in the bottom of the cage...
Paper over it... shallow dishes with his food and
water, he will learn there, when he gets better slowly move
his dishes higher in the cage.. With paper over the grid, he will be able to walk, and his food wont go threw to the bottom pf the cage.
