Today, the market had organic carrots with the greens still on them. The greens are a big hit with Emma and Silver. I put them in the cage an hour ago, and they are still working on them. I think I made their day

It's so much fun to see them walking around twirling the stalks in their beaks.

Carrot tops are a GREAT veggie for cockatiels. They're attracted to vegetables that look like a stem. In the wild they would chew on grass stems to get the juices.

It usually takes time for new foods to be accepted. Unfortunately carrot tops aren't something that most people buy frequently so the birds don't get a lot of opportunities to adjust.

They're a specialty item here. Most stores don't have them and they cost a lot more than carrots that don't have the tops. I'm guessing that it's because the ones with the tops on have to be a lot fresher than the ones with the tops off - the greenery goes bad a lot faster than the orange part does.

Oh THATS what you guys meant by carrot tops. I thought you meant the top of a regular carrot. Then no, my birds never tried carrot tops. I know they would love it if I had them. They love vegetables.

Yes, we meant the green leaves that grow on top of a carrot. Supposedly you can grow your own by cutting off the top of the orange part of a carrot and sticking it in water, but it doesn't work for me. http://homeguides.sfgate.com/transplant ... 35790.html

When I bought the carrots with the tops, I bought about a pound of them and after the first day the tops were too wilted to offer them again.
Is there a secret to keep them nice and perky? Maybe rolled into a humid paper towel in the fridge?
