Cor Barbara you've given me the idea to try the dandelions and grass's.... I'm sure they are safe...
My birds luv a little of the freshly mowed lawn grass.... I wash well in clean water and dry with a hand drier... they luv it..

Really??? I never thought of giving them that! I am picking all the dandelions and long grass today and then I need to get the lawnmower out, I will save some for them!
It looks like having a garden will seriously cut down my grocery bill :D

I found out that the second grass is called Timothy, and the flower one is not dandelion but saw thistle.
They seem to be both safe since none of my birds died or got sick.

Here's a site saying sow thistle is great to eat: http://www.eattheweeds.com/sonchus-sow- ... igs-eye-2/

Timothy hay is widely used as animal feed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy-grass

They are right now fighting for the timothy stalks. Frank is having a go to a puffy dandelion and his face is priceless! He lick it then spits it off.

Tomorrow I film them, they are ridiculous!!!

I have found another type of plant growing in my garden.
I suspect it comes from some of the seeds I throw out for the wild birds.
These are the pictures, can someone recognise it? Is it safe?

That's a canary grass seedhead, and yes it's from the leftover cockatiel seed you threw out in the yard. Your tiels will love it. I try to plant it intentionally but the climate here is so harsh that I don't get too much. Or maybe it's just my general ineptitude with plants not the climate lol.

Thank you Tielfan, there are other grass types growing near the canary seed stalks and if you don't mind tomorrow I'd take a picture so you or anyone who recognises them can tell me if they also are grown bird seeds and whether they are safe.

I gave the one in the pic to Bubu who jumped on it but I think it was too dry so he didn't really like it.
I looked at them up close in various stages, and the best seems when there are white soft seeds/fruits still inside or coming loose.
I offered some today and they were an immediate success :cheery:

EDIT: I am thinking of opening a square in the lawn and sow these seeds there. They come from different mixes, from Trill to a few types I buy loose from the pet shop.

I also have a few plants that produce berries, I will post those pics too, maybe some of them are edible

Cockatiels LOVE unripe seed heads. A scientific study on the feeding ecology of wild cockatiels found that when their favorite seeds became hard and dry, if possible they would switch to a different seed that wasn't ripe yet, even though they were perfectly capable of eating the dry seed.

How tall are they? I grow lettuce indoors for my birds (and then hide toys in it so it becomes food+play), but not much else as other plants get too big. I might be able to swing a 1-2 foot tall grass though...

One or two feet tall sounds just about right. I haven't actually measured the plants and they vary in size, but that's exactly what I would have guessed.
