How? I just put the bird seed in a pot and water? I think I can grow a sunflower as well. :plot2:

That's one way to do it. Another way is to plant it in the ground.

What do I do if it's rice? Can I give them the plant to destroy or can it be dangerous?
Tomorrow I will look inside, I can't wait to see what it contains!!! :blobg: :blobg: :blobg:

The grain is safe of course. I couldn't find much information on the leaves, but one source did say that rice straw is high in oxalates so it shouldn't be fed in excess. It also said that soaking it in water would help reduce the oxalates. Overall it sounds like it would be OK in moderate amounts once in a while, especially if you let it sit in water for a while first.

I dissected the plants (sprigs) and these are the pictures.
In one of them there is something brownish that could be the beginning of a grain, but I am completely ignorant about these things.
Every little "ball" is made of layers of green matter, you peel one and there is a smaller one inside and so on.

Does it look like rice to you? I am really curious about this plant!

I can't tell from looking at the plant, but I bet it's actually oats. I couldn't find a good picture of green oats in the field, but the oat sprays sold for pets have a pretty loose head:

Oats are common in bird seed and rice isn't. So unless you've been tossing raw rice in the yard for some reason, I don't know how rice seed would get out there. But there's an obvious source for oat seed.

Ok, they should be pretty safe to feed to the flock then, fingers crossed.

Yes, I think they're safe. They'd better be, since oat sprays are being sold as bird treats.

How are the possible oat sprays doing? I just want to let you guys know that Barbara has tempted me to plant them but Carolyn made me actually do it. It will be exciting what I will get. These are the possible options. Image

Those small balls are millet, right? Do you think I can grow spray millet with that?

Baruch, the way mines grew was: I put some seeds on a low wall and on the ground for the wild birds to pick up.
Some found a way to the soil and grew.
Every time I tried to sprout or properly seed those in a pot (a mix just like yours) they'd become soggy or didn't grow anyway.
I suggest you throw one or two handfuls on the soil (in a spot where the gardener isn't going to touch them when they grow, far from flowers etc... or you just ask the gardener to give you like a square foot where to plant so that he knows that he shouldn't treat them as weeds), and they will grow on their own.
You will have lil plants and sprays in no time :)
