I hope English wild plants are similar to the ones you find in your American gardens.
Jan, I am sure you find these regularly in your garden.

I haven't mowed my lawn in a while, and some plants are grown to the point of producing flowers.
There are two in particular, I got many of them, and I was wondering if I can give them to the flock to chew on.

The first one has a flower:

The second is much taller, I think it's the normal lawn grass overgrowing

I was thinking of collecting a few, tie them together and hang for the birds to chew and destroy. I don't think that they'd eat them but I need to be sure that they won't get poisoned.

What you guys think? Are those safe?

The first one looks like a dandelion.

The first one is safe. I do not know about the second one though.

The first one does look like a dandelion, and every part of the dandelion plant is safe and edible. You might want to look at the leaves and compare with online pictures to make sure that's what it is - I don't know if you have any similar-looking plants.

The second one is grass that's grown up enough to go to seed. Different grass species can have different-looking seeds but I recognize the general look. Unripe grass seed is primo cockatiel food, it's a big part of their diet in the wild. Your birds probably WILL eat both of these items, it's good nutrition for them. Dandelion leaves are highly nutritious so you can offer those too - the young leaves are said to taste better than older ones.

I intentionally leave part of my lawn unmowed so I can use it for tiel food. Don't use anything that's had pesticide or herbicide put on it, but plain fertilizer is OK.

The general opinion is that all grass and grass seed is safe: http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=3161

In the US it's common for tall fescue grass to have a fungal infection that can cause problems for livestock that eats it. This is a specific type of grass that's specifically planted for hay production and as livestock forage. I don't think it's likely to be an issue with lawn grass. http://web.extension.illinois.edu/oardc ... /43363.pdf

Just make sure that the flowers are bird-safe. My guys love to tear up hibiscus blossoms and leaves, especially the 'tongue'. You probably have lots of that in Florida. Here's Shodu having fun with hibiscus:

I love the texts you put in that picture. It's like a short poem with an interesting ending. :)
