Daddy was gone for a week and I checked in every other day on the birds. He came back today and I walked up to the birds and noticed gray feathers on the ground, one being a blood feather. I've had no big scares with blood feathers before, but something made me truly sad. B lost all his flights on his left wing.

After MONTHS of flight training, clipping and conditioning I finally had his wings beautiful for almost a full year until tonight. His wings and follicles are weak and damaged so I sincerely hope this will not give me or him any major issues and he'll just grow it out be fine.

Jaid also was slightly injured, he cut his nare twice, but it seems pretty healed over, so hardly a deep scratch at all. But I just hate this. Every time he leaves this happens.

When I first saw the thread title I thought you might be talking about Haimovfids lol.

I hope Beaker's feathers grow back in without any problems. When there's a change in the household routine, it can make birds more nervous and more prone to night frights. Is there anything you can do to help make them calmer? I don't know if you use a night light or not, but maybe a brighter light would help during these times. It doesn't have to be "noonday sun" bright, but something a little brighter than the usual light level in the room might help keep them from spooking.

Oh no! So sorry to hear about the feathers. I hope he grows them back in quickly.

I also thought you were talking about me lol.

This situation reminds me of Casey's Tsuka. He would always break his flight feathers. He has a permanent follicle damage. I hope Beaker will grow back his wing feathers without a problem.

I think Tsuka did eventually grow all his flights in, but it took a long time, and before the final success there were a lot of deformed feathers that fell out before they reached full size. He came from a bad situation, with heavy smoking around the birds, and probably had a lot of toxins in his body which may have been part of the problem.

I am so sorry! I love those two boys and hate to think of them having a hard time :(
I am sure the feathers will regrow and Beaks will be back to his majestic self.
I know very little of your birds' "logistic" situation, but is there any chance of you being able to take them with you at your moms' when you know that dad will be away for a while? They could stay in a smaller cage, the large carrier type, and you'd be able to keep an eye on them for those few days.

If this is not an option:

When I moved the birds lately they had a couple of frights due to the new environment, new shadows, noises etc, so I introduced a 3watts light (equivalent to 25watts of the old type), very feeble but stronger than the small night light they usually have on at night.
It made a lot of difference! And these 3 or 4 watts are very inexpensive because not many people need them in their houses (they are really weak)

Oh Dear...Stephanie I am sorry to hear you sounding so sad. Peach had night freights and then I too got her a nite lite. Not bright but enough so she could see to get back on her perch if she get upset and fell off.
The wings will grow back sooner or later but the good thing is that your birds have someone like you to love them.

Thank you everybody.

Barbara, moving them to mama's will not work. Mama is a very neat person and the birds will stress her out. The only other pet I'm allowed over there is my betta Fireball, the fish who is at least 100 years old, and, you know, cause he stays in his tank.

I also have Shelby, the equally old cat. She is going to be 11 this year and she is my whole world. She is extremely jealous and protective of me. If I give attention to anything else she gets insanely jealous.

They would be better off over here. But, I will try the night light next time. I gave them a 10 minute bath last night in the shower to help soothe B's skin. That bird has the driest skin. Next time I go to Lowes, I'm picking up an aloe vera plant for him.

I also just realized I put this under diet and nutrition instead of health and safety.

Whoops.

Not a problem, we're relaxed about things like that on this forum.
