I'm impressed that they would eat a big pellet! Parrotlets are famous for eating food made for larger parrots, but not cockatiels and lovebirds.

The pellet size is basically geared toward a bird's beak capacity. Smaller birds don't always have the beak strength or the leverage to break pieces off of a bigger pellet. But parrots will always break a food down to bite size before they try to swallow it.
