Our bird store keeps insisting that seed mix with vitamins should be preferred to the same mix without vitamins. The one with vitamins is more expensive per pound. Maybe that's the reason?

It's pretty pointless because not only do cockatiels not eat the shells, but they also have dry tounges which doesn't even let the vitamins get in when they ARE chewing them. We are talking about the shells of the seeds that have vitamins on them.

B's got it right. There are some bird species that swallow seeds whole, and vitamins sprayed on the shell will do some good for them. But parrots don't eat the shells and will get little or none of the vitamins. I buy plain seeds with no added vitamins, and rely on pellets and veggies to provide the nutrients that seeds don't have.

You can save the money from the vitamin seeds to get something more nutritional, pellets and veggies!

well, pellets and veggies is another story. At least one of my birds doesn't eat any veggies or pellets.
I am talking about the seed mix (they call it Deluxe) that is available with and without vitamins
it's $1.34 a lbs without vitamins
and $1.94 with vitamins

Thanks guys! I will keep saving my money then
for a 5 lbs bag , there is $3 dollar difference

Nutriberries are nutritionally equivalent to pellets and I think your birds like to eat those. So they're getting some vitamins that way!

Yep. Your store keeper is right in only one thing: your birds need vitamins. But that doesn't meen the seedmix with is better.

I would follow Tielfans advice.
I mix in pellets with the seeds and (only when my vegetable garden has leftovers) give vegetables now and again. I only give what I grow myself, I'm kind of afraid of what is sprayed on what we buy for ourselves in the store. Apart from a coconut and an apple or pear on occasion...

All of the species eat them... But not all birds are equally fond. The coconut seems to be the least favorite. The 'wild seeds' (mostly chickweed) I put up are most loved across all species!! But it's a rare treat since I don't let it grow very often. (My wife likes the garden neat)
