Just received my Countrywide germinating/sprouting seeds...
My question..... the best way to get them to sprout without it turning moldy or sour?
I've never been successful yet.... but this time I'm determined to get it right.... thank you

It can be helpful to add a bit of vinegar to the soaking water to discourage the nasties. Some climates are friendlier to sprouting than others. People in a dry climate have fewer problems than those in a damp climate.

1. Pour fresh cold water into the cup with seeds on the bottom
2. Stir, add a little bit of vinegar
3 Leave overnight or at least for 4-5 hours
4 stir well again, then remove any seeds that float on surface (I have to remove a lot of sunflower seeds, our store puts them in the sprouting mix but my birds dont like them)
5 Drain whatever is left in the strainer. Rinse well with fresh cold water. Drain well... (10 minutes at least, I also tilt the strainer that helps to remove excess of water)
6 serve in the bowl for few hours.
Then I recycle this bowl of seeds (I only make one per day, the amount fits in the small strainer)
To recycle / refresh, I add cold water right into the feeding bowl, a bit of vinegar, let stand a little, drain, rinse well, drain, serve again. If there are some hulls on the top when you put seeds in the bowl, just stir it.
I refresh them several times a day.
Rinse, recycle outside.

I don't sprout for 3 days as some instruction suggest.
Only soak overnight, then rinse, drain, serve, seeds keep being sprouted while being served. After a day of being served, you can see that they are sprouted. I mean, you don't have to wait until they are really sprouted to serve them. After overnight soak, the process is activated and this is all that is needed IMHO

It takes time for them to learn to like it. It's wet, and cockatiels tend to prefer dry food. But my guys loved it after they got used to it.

my birds like them too.
I let water drain rather well, so my seeds are served dump but not soaking wet.

Jan, you should experiment as you get different results with different seeds in different climates. Who knows how it works in UK :)

I would start with soaking overnight (add a bit vinegar)
then drain, rinse, let stand in the strainer for few hours, rinse again very well, let stand, and so on - basically rinse and let seeds stand in the strainer several times a day. You will see how long it takes to see little sprouts coming out.

On my 2nd batch.... have taken your advise on it all
Chipper.... this lot
looks better than the 1st...
Seems to take around 24 hours to sprout.... guess it depends how warm my home is... with the Welsh weather the central heating is often on...
thanks for the advise was very good of you....

you are welcome Jan
I would try little batches to figure out what works the best for you

Actually, it didn't take long for my birds to start eating them. Sprouts smell nice.
