Oh yeah, that's a gorgeous lutino budgie! I think it's too young to sex accurately though. I'm not an expert on budgies so I don't know how accurate the pupil method is, but there are a variety of other sexing methods for young birds that are better than flipping a coin but nowhere close to being 100% accurate. Cere color is supposed to be a good indicator of sex in mature lutino budgies, with pink/purple indicating a male and white/blue to tan indicating a female. I would lean toward male with this bird just because of the mirror obsession but this isn't a 100% accurate indicator either. If he/she sings to the mirror and regurgitates to it, that would be a stronger indicator of maleness because these are male courtship moves. But it's possible that the bird hasn't matured to the point of making courtship moves yet.

I'm starting to think it's a male myself because it definitely dances and sings in front of a mirror and sometimes i'll find a kind of film on the mirror which could be what it regurgitated. I removed the mirror which was absolutely heartbreaking because he's now clearly upset. I do see the up side though because he definitely is still interested in it even outside the cage. I'll continue to keep coaxing it out with the mirror. Do you think I should just leave the mirror propped up outside of it's door or only let it see it when I want it to come out? He seems so heartbroken though just kinda standing there with his head down but I bought him a new toy so maybe he'll cheer up when he figures out he got a new toy.

Wow what a beautiful budgie.. luv his colour,
I think he is a male... Ive a budgie...Image
Here's mine...
Bryni doesn't like being handled, so I've trained him
to fly from the cage to a table top... where he will sit..
My bird was found in the wild so I don't know his past...
He wasn't use to handling, still doesn't like it, wont sit on
my finger... I clap my hands and say Home Bryni, he
flies directly to his cage.
I wouldn't take the mirror out, your bird looks young.
Sit by his cage, sing, chat, read, anything so he gets use to you.
Spend time and get him really use to you. Most budgies luv to be
handled, when he comes out hold his mirror where he can
see it use it instead of millet... it may just work.
Bryni spends hours chatting and looking in his, as you say
he really luvs it.. Good luck hope this helps a little.

Thank you I already put it back in because he seemed lost kept just standing there bobbing up and down looking for it.
When I was pretty young my dad had a budgie that looked a lot like yours. My dad was great with animals, his budgies would all fly right to him unfortunately he's not around to give me advice on mine. Thank you for the advice and the compliment on Amarillo I looked and waited a long time to find a bird with the looks I wanted that didn't seem scared.
He seemed fine at the store and was until I bumped into his cage one day but i'll get him there. I put the mirror back in and I have these treat bars I bought earlier that he ripped right into so I think can use that instead.

You don't have to have the mirror out of the cage all the time, just 'borrow' it when you want to use it for other purposes. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Male budgies who regurgitate to a mirror usually cough up the seeds then re-swallow them since the mirror didn't eat them lol. So traces on the mirror are all you're likely to see.

If you have a glass or plastic bird figure that's more or less budgie size, he might enjoy visiting with that. Here's one of my budgies from sometime in the 1960s. We had two or three budgie-type bird figures and he loved them all:

I usually find like a yellow tan film on the mirror. I just thought maybe he was licking it. I was told before that males tend to sing more while the females tend to squawk more and he does sing a lot. One other thing is that he seems to start singing like a bird possessed when he hears running water. He's not mad I've made the distinction between mad squawking and singing does that seem normal to you? Also I have him in my kitchen so that people are frequently around him but I've recently seen something on the net that advise against this because of cooking fumes. What are your thoughts on this?

Oh and do they eat seed whole? Because I usually end up emptying a bunch of empty seed casings when I change his food. I'm watering with a silo not sure if this is best. I sometimes wonder if he has trouble finding it because I have never seen him drink but he has to be because he'd be dead by now if he wasn't.
