I think is messed up letting Poppy stay next to Beck. When I let them out, Beck would go back in by himself and Poppy would step up on his stick and I would move him back. I came back from my mother's house today (I stay there for the weekends and come back on the weekdays) and Poppy wanted nothing to do with me! When I let them out, Beck went back and Poppy acted like he hated me all of a sudden. Flat out refused to step onto the stick and just kept flying around for a half hour after patient attempts to get him to remember. Do you think I let him bond with Beck for long enough to the point where he's done with me? I know I wanted him to be a buddy for Beck, and I'm glad about that, but I wanted him to be a good example for Beck and I had that, but now it's like he doesn't care anymore. Do I have to separate them to start re-training? I just want him to remember what I taught him without completely treating me like dirt once he sees another budgie. Pardon me, I'm just starting to worry since he knew his step up and that was so important I taught him that myself. I was so proud I taught him that even more so, that he learned it so quickly. Do I separate them for re-training? I just don't want him unable to focus...

You could try taking him to a different room and working with him there. At first he'll probably try to get back to where Beck is, so just play with the computer or something until he gives up on that, and then break out the treats and reward him for interacting with you.

I had that same problem with my budgies. If you seperate them, most likely, they will scream loudly trying to comminicate with each other. I had success with training them TOGETHER. Try giving them millet, or another favorite treat, to encourage them to spend time with you. My budgies often wanted to return to their cage, so i took them to another room while training them.

Hope this helped! Good luck!

I moved him back into his quarantine room where I am and he and Beck didn't even make a peep being separated. Does that mean they weren't exactly bonded yet?

I don't know how long it takes to form a flock bond - it probably varies from one bird to another. In any case Poppy is behaving better now, so enjoy it while it lasts! It's possible that the previous behavior was just due to the mood he was in at the time.

Oh no, I'm so sorry that Poppy was acting like he ot wanted to be with Speck.
I know exactly how you feel. I felt like that when Juno and Willow were skittish, but I got used to it and Juno stepped up on my hand many times. But there had to be millet.

Pop tart will probably go back to you since he is all by himself now

I wouldn't worry too much. He is a baby and enjoying flying around with his new buddy and being naughty. I don't think he forgets the training, he just chooses to ignore it because he's super-young and curious and full of energy.
I only have one experience with babies but I can assure you that they were exactly the same; they knew the step up thing but when they were all together they were very excitable. Just like kids :)

Babies like to fly. They don't like to be locked up in the cage. So if they think you're going to put them in the cage, get ready for a chase!

So he still knows how to step up? He didn't forget it? I've never been in this situation, I've either had tame birds or not tame birds, nothing else in between, so I have a habit to look at it as either one side or the other.
