My parakeet, Frosty, has been chewing on my windowsills like crazy! I'm afraid I'm going to get in trouble. :slap: How do I get her to stop chewing? I'm getting so frustrated! :bang: Has anyone had this problem before with his/her bird? If you have, please share about what you did and whether it worked or not.

I would remover her from the window before she starts chewing.

Well none of my budgies are tame, but they aren't afraid of me, so I just shoo them away. If she is tame, get her to step up and move her a desired location, like a playgym.

Another approach is to cover up the windowsill with something so she can't chew it. Spread a towel of something over the part she likes to gnaw, and tack or tape it in place.

If there is paint on the window sill, be very careful, as paint can and does kill many birds..
cover the sill and shoo them off it...

I have this problem with my tiels as well. They peck at and chew the wood and they'll perch atop the cay window curtain in the living room and peck at the wall where the old curtain rod used to be.

Normally, they're allowed to be around the window if, and only if, they're behaved. The minute they start pecking and chewing at the wood or wall then they get shooed off.

I'm a bit late replying to this.

I have a similar problem with my tiel landing on the top of the window frame, then chewing on it. I've tried shooing her away when she does it, but it's like an every minute kind of thing.

So, I got some plastic drop cloths and taped them over the top of the window frame. So far, that's working. It's not particularly attractive, but I guess it's the price of having these lovely birds in my life.

I am also trying to provide lots of things for them to chew on on top of the cage. Wicker baskets are a favorite, and I can just put them up there, because the cage top is flat. They are inexpensive enough that I don't mind them getting destroyed.

I think you're going to have to tell an adult about it (unless you'd rather wait until you get caught). It isn't something that you're likely to be able to fix by yourself. But before they find out, figure out what you're going to do to prevent any more damage in the future so you can tell them about it at the same time they find out about the existing damage.

The plastic drop cloths are working well for me.

However, they really need to have things to chew--otherwise they will find more targets that are less acceptable.
