Sometimes taking the eggs away will work. But very often it makes the hen keep laying more eggs trying to get a full clutch, which isn't healthy for her. It's safer to let her sit on the eggs. You could give her Cuddles' old eggs to sit on since those definitely aren't going to hatch.

Stella is unusually quiet. I thought they get tired after the egg is laid. I haven't see any eggs yet but who knows.

and we all know what happens when one clutch didn't hatch - they lay the second one, right?

Yes, they usually lay a second clutch until you manage to prevent them. But letting them keep unhatchable eggs at least gives you a delay of 3 weeks, instead of nonstop egg laying.

no eggs yet or maybe I don't find them. But she doesn't protect them if she laid any.
I feel bad for them. I don't find keeping them separately possible, so the only way will be to rehome one of them or both to different homes. WOuld it be very traumatic for them to loose the best friend? They have always been together for a long time (TaiterTot and Stella)

It'll be traumatic to lose a mate, but they'll get over it.

I think she changed her mind about laying eggs. They also don't seem to be mating a lot.
Last time I saw him trying to get on her back but she flew away

today one of my birds somehow managed to get pony tail elastic around his neck (and he couldn't take it off). It was funny and probably dangerous at the same time. He was trying to get rid of it, and other birds tried to play with it, I managed to catch him to remove it. I think he picked it up while walking on the floor.

I plan to be gone to a several days vacation. Husband stays home but he works 8 to 5.30/ he will take basic care of the birds, but really basic. I can't blame him, as it takes me about an hour for the morning routine (to give them food, change all the water, and so on). He definitely has neither time nor desire. (plus taking care of 3 rabbits)
Another option I have is to board them in the bird store, in a special Bed-n-Breakfast room (where they keep all birds who are boarded while the owners are gone)
With the first option, I am afraid that they would have more chances to do their nesting behavior, that's how we got first eggs back then - when I was out of town for a month.
For the second option, birds would be kept in cages, and I only have 2 cages for 10 birds. We have never done the store boarding. certainly this way birds would be more stressed (but on the bright side, this sudden change would probably discourage them from laying any eggs). I always feel sorry that birds in that store don't get any fresh air or sunshine. I also wonder if its' possible for them to catch a disease from other birds (I know they won't interact directly)?
what do you think? I will be gone for maximum 5 days. Now they climb into cage on their own usually when it's time to sleep in the evening.
