Hopefully that title caught your attention, but since I went to San Diego last week for 5 days, I came home to the sound of "eek... eek... eek... eek", in other words, Beaker masturbating. Now, I think I remember hearing that they'll do it because it feels good, but has nothing to do with being nesty? Or, does it involve hormones or make them hormonal in any way?

It takes a certain hormone level for him to want to do it, so yes he's hormonal and yes he IS doing it because it feels good lol. As long as he doesn't turn nasty and aggressive from the hormones it's not really an issue, you can let him have his fun. But if he starts getting mean you can hit him with the long nights.

JoJo did it very casually, and not when he was hormonal...I just let him be as long as he was in his cage. It never seemed to develop into raging hormones.

It's funny because the only one of my birds who does this is my lone female. Her love affair with her cage bars is neverending.

Most of my birds don't do it either, except for Mims who goes at it like she's training for the Olympics. Vlad is starting to figure it out too and I'm hoping that it will lead to actual mating. It might be something that a bird has to discover by accident instead of thinking of it on their own. In the wild there's no need for it of course since they'd have a mate to have fun with.

Well, seriously, about 30 seconds ago, Beaker started a huge fight with Jaid over a toy in the cage. I put my hand in between them and now my hand is bleeding. My boys get into extreme fights when they do and I spray them with a stream of water from their mister to calm them. I know, it sounds mean, but it works when someone is going for it since these 2 are locked on once they get going. Once I nailed Beaker 3 times he finally stopped going for Jaid and I talked in a calm tone to settle them down again and reassure them. That is the only way to calm them down when they're going for each other's throats. Minor squibbles I let them work on their own. Usually Jaid starts it because he gets tired or jealous, but I am accounting this attack to his masturbation.

It sounds like hormones to me. Hormonal males tend to be aggressive.

Emma is the only one of my four birds that masturbates. It's funny, because when Piper and Emma were together Piper mated with her multiple times a day. Piper now never seems to think about sex.

Well, he did it again. This time right in front of company. Oh Beaky. He even ejaculated on his perch this time, but luckily they didn't see that. Ugh, where are his manners?

Lucky you. That would have been embarrassing if they saw...Or worse, it went on them.
