I'm trying to fill in those shoes myself, but most of it is genetics and medical advice. I'm better with basic information but I was basically appointed because I am a frequent flyer, not because I'm insanely knowledgeable.

The people who were really superb with the genetics and medical advice are all gone now, and it doesn't look like new people have filled the gap. It's not actually necessary to be an "expert" on anything to be a moderator, since the job is really about keeping the peace. Being there a lot and having reasonably decent management skills is all that's really needed in a moderator. But it's good to have some experts on hand whether they're moderators or not, so people can get sound answers to their questions.

Do you think it's too late for me to try to take it on?

You mean take on the role of an expert? It's never too late for that!! You're young so you're really just getting started. It does take a lot of work, mostly looking up the answers to other peoples' questions and being prepared to have your answer shot down by somebody with more experience (and learning from it when it happens). But if you keep it up you'll find out that you have to look things up less often because YOU KNOW THE ANSWER already. Nobody can ever know everything of course, and I find myself looking things up pretty much on a daily basis, either because I don't know the answer or because I want to double check the answer before I shoot my mouth off. I save myself a lot of embarrassment that way! The person who will benefit most from all of this is you, because you learn so much more than you ever would have known otherwise.
