The new flat has three rooms in total, one more than the old place. They are intended as two bedrooms and one living room, but since we are a very atypical household the space distribution is going to be... unusual.
The living room is also the bedroom, with the sofa bed, and home of the little caique who hates the tiels and can't be left alone with them. He especially hates Bubu and Keith.
Why my poor tiels are hated by every other parrot in the world???? It's so sad, they are so friendly and polite with our guests, and the guests only want to rip them apart :-(

Anyway, caique in living room.
I have chosen the biggest bedroom to be the bird room; it is quite a long room, measuring 4.6m (15ft), not too large at 2.75m (9ft). They will be able to fly nicely, it's not the Outback but 15ft is good exercise.

Right now the room is a white canvas, which is very exciting... and very intimidating.
The only limitation on what I can do there is my mediocre DIY skills but I can ask Paul to help.

I want to make something really great for them. The room is spacious enough to accommodate some furniture so I can spend time with them, if I plan well.

Please help me!
Pictures, videos, ideas, it's all very welcome :-)
I want that room to be a real bird paradise.

One thing I am going to build is a little aviary just outside the window, so that they can go in and out as they like.
Something like this below, possibly less ugly

Image

I also need to build some kind of food table, like a large bird feeding station.

Cant help you there... my birds are all
in cages, in the K/dinner, where I spend most of my time.
They have out of cage time in the evenings...

You.ve got me thinking Barbara, I live in a 4 bedroomed bungalow, a couple of lounges, plenty of room for a bird room, I have never thought about it....may do now!
Jeff and I rumble around.... so why don't I...
Project to think about.

I'd get a couple of bird trees--you can make your own for about $5 in materials if you have branches from safe trees. We had a nasty winter so I snagged a few huge fallen branches for my birds.

I took rope (sisal if memory serves) and made a few "telephone wires" for the birds to play on by screwing brackets to the walls and tying the rope tightly between them. This is my birds' 2nd favorite place to perch.

Their first favorite place to perch is willow wreaths--I have a few large ones hanging from the telephone wires and the ceiling.

Bird decals can look great on a wall too.

Hmm. I can't get the creative juices flowing yet, but give me a few hours and I'm sure I'll come up with some idea that would be near impossible to perform.

I've seen pictures where someone used wire shelving to build a bird highway all around the edge of the room about a foot below the ceiling. This sort of thing:

I borrowed that idea and made a wooden boardwalk across one side of the aviary:

These walkways are very popular with the birds. The people who had it indoors put a row of cages under the shelves so all the bird poop from above fell into the cages for easy cleanup.

I love the idea of having an aviary outside with fly-through windows into the house.

I have a couple of things that I want to build after I get done with the breeding cage that I'm making right now. One is a screen door (hardware cloth) for the bird room so I can keep the birds inside without closing the regular solid door. That room is on the southwest corner of the house and it gets super hot if it doesn't have ventilation from the doorway.

The other item is a hardware cloth 'cage' that will be screwed to the bird room ceiling to enclose the ceiling fan. Then I'll be able to run the fan while the birds are out of the cage

Thank you all for the ideas, brilliant!
I have found a few ants on the floor, I am sure they will soon arrive en masse to shift the seeds lying on the floor.
I vacuum regularly but seeds hide everywhere.
My aim is to keep all the food dishes together in some type of "building" where the tiny bits won't escape.
Do any of you have found a way to contain the seed escape?
Obviously I will be still vacuuming and steaming the floor, but at the moment I remove a heap every day, that's really too much. I am worried that the ants might start climbing and go into the cages :-(

These dishes are expensive and hard to refill, but they did dramatically cut down on how much seed was falling on my floor.

That's an awesome feeder. On Amazon UK it costs the equivalent of $25, sadly.
I even thought of building something like a bird restaurant, where they go inside the box and find all their food... I went as far as to draw a plan, then looked at it and realised that it looked just like an enormous nest lol. Scrapped.

The room is slowly shaping up.
This is how it looked the first day we arrived...

Obviously they had to investigate everything.

The boing has been the first add, it looks so small now, in that big room!
