I see the caique boy! Good grief Barbara, how many cages do you have? I'm only allowed to have 2 in the house. But no limit on how big. :P

It's looking good, and the birds look happy!

I'm paranoid about bare window glass, because one of my birds was killed several years ago when he randomly decided that he wanted to fly through a window even though he knew perfectly well that there was glass in it. So I'd suggest putting some tape or decals on the glass so it doesn't look so much like wide open space. Your birds are fully flighted and a crash at full speed would be dangerous.

Decals that look like green plants would be attractive. Just don't get one that looks like a flying hawk lol. I have a hawk sticker on the outside of one window to discourage the wild birds from flying into the glass, and I have to keep the blinds low enough that it can't be seen on the inside. The cockatiels refuse to go into that room if they can see the hawk sticker.

Tielfan I am with you on that. These windows are even larger than the ones I had in the old flat... 120cm high and 240cm wide, 48x96ft; my guys are pretty glass savvy but I wouldn't risk it leaving them all bare.
I am seriously thinking of ditching Flickr because uploading pictures is taking forever and it gives me error 75% of the times... When I'm done I will post what I did to the windows.

Because I was researching this recently, some products to prevent window crashes:

Featherfriendly tape, which looks like soft dots patterning the window.

WindowAlert, cute little decals that apparently glow in the UV spectrum, so they're super-visible to birds.

Good suggestion! This site has several other suggestions: http://forsythaudubon.wordpress.com/cat ... dly-yards/

They're all aimed at preventing strikes by outdoor birds, and are generally designed to be applied to the outside of the glass. Some would work equally well inside, but anything that's designed to work with UV light won't work inside unless you have true full spectrum lights that emit UVA. Ordinary light bulbs are designed for the human visual spectrum and don't have the UV.

You.ve got me thinking Barbara, I live in a 4 bedroomed bungalow, a couple of lounges, plenty of room for a bird room, I have never thought about it....may do now!
Jeff and I rumble around.... so why don't I...
Project to think about.

Go for it, Jan! It's a lot of fun, and you can always use the bird room as your own "relaxing" space, where you can sit on a comfy chair (I had a recliner that sadly had to be thrown away, but it was ideal), watch telly with the birds, do your crafts, look at them doing their silly things... You won't regret it!

Finally I managed to upload a few photos on Flickr. One by one, a real pain in the neck!

This is what I did with the window.
First picture, below, the window without any modification, huge and dangerous!

Image

The two side panes are openable, and I needed to make it safe so that the birds wouldn't escape.
The centre pane is fixed so there wasn't need to do much for it.

These are the two side frames

That coloured square on the second picture is a little window cut in the mesh where I added a long sock. That way I can open the window putting my hand in the sock but the birds won't get out.
Today I am going to make a mesh door for that sock opening because it needs to be protected from those little crafty beaks.

Image

The central part didn't need a screen so I just hanged a ladder made of mixed branches and sticks to it. Not very pretty  but my birds have not great taste themselves so they like it

Image

Maybe I can avoid window stickers, the guys seem to completely avoid the two side mesh frames and concentrate on the middle side, sitting on the ladder.

If you are wondering what that bottle is, read the next post

It's looking so good! They will get used to it, hang a piece of millet and that perch will be their best friend.
