Is foam good for them to shred? Any possibility to ingest a piece?
I saw a whole bunch of toys at the Fair that were using deck of cards, foam, etc.... as shredding materials.
I also recalled a very simple boredom recipe - regular construction paper cut in strips and folded into some layers. Couldn't find any in the house though.

Paper and cardboard are fine. Foam isn't, there's a definite chance that they might eat it, and it wouldn't be good for them.

I made a bird bath with foam and I saw chew marks on it. I never used it again.

You can even use the cardboard in the toilet paper roll as a toy. Just stick crumbled paper on both sides and poke Popsicle sticks all around it. It's a huge hit! I'll try to see if I have any pictures.

let me see... Kitchen rolls must be the same as paper towel rolls? Do we need to do something with pine cones to make sure they are contaminants free?
I read that adhesive on toilet paper rolls (and on paper towel) can be toxic. Not true?

Haimovfids, picture would be great. thanks!

here is a wooden swing my husband bought in a thrift store. I cleaned it with damp cloth. It took a long time for the birds to start being interested in it. I can see them chewing it a little bit. I wonder of it's safe.

This isn't my picture. Someone made it on a different bird forum.
