I want to order a sleeping hut but i have heard many stories about birds dying from getting strangled from chewing on it. Is there any type that is safe for conures and that wont kill them? That would be nice.

I don't think there's any kind that's guaranteed to be safe. You have to keep an eye on the situation and remove the happy hut if it's getting chewed up.

Happy huts aren't appropriate for cockatiels, but the internet is indicating that conures sleep in a nest hole all year long so it's OK for them. If you'd like to give him a place to sleep that doesn't have so many safety issues, you could give him a nestbox. It won't look as cute as a happy hut, but if you hang it on the outside of the cage you can peek in on him while he's in it. The cage you've ordered has side doors so it's totally doable.

The main reason why i want a happy hut is because he's going to look so cute inside it. I won't even try the happy hut. The bird will only need a couple of hours of being unsupervised to chew out some strings to strangle his head or tie up his foot. I don't want to take the risk.

If only they made bird safe tents.

I think I'm going to make my own homemade bird tent. Is there any type of fabric that's not made of anything can he can strangle himself with? Like no lose strings or loops from strings? I can make it if there is such a fabric.

If you can find a sturdy piece of leather, that wouldn't have any strings. Regular cloth is made out of threads woven together so there's going to be a fraying hazard with just about anything else.

One alternative is to get a happy hut and only give it to him occasionally, when you're going to be staying in the room with him and can keep an eye on what he's doing with it. You could hang it up at night for him to sleep in and take it out in the morning. He's not likely to do much chewing during the night.

You could always get a snuggle corner, but I still think it could be as hazardous as a hut.

I just remembered that felt isn't made of woven threads so that might work. You could put several layers together to make it thick enough, or you could make a frame out of wood or heavy plastic or even thin metal, and cover it with felt. You'll need something stiff in the bottom in any case. Go to a pet shop and look at a happy hut in person to get an idea of how it's made and what you would need to do to make something similar.

Hobby stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby have felt in one-foot squares for crafting, and JoAnn Fabrics has that and also bolts of 48" wide felt in the fabric department. So if you need a bigger piece you can get it.

I found a tutorial from ehow on how to make a bird sleeping tent.

I can make it from cardboard. I just had another idea. How would i work if i cut off the fleece from a bird hut and sew felt on the inside?

Fleece isn't supposed to ravel either so it might be a relatively safe type of cloth. I did some more reading on happy huts and found out that there are several types of problems that can occur.

1. Long loose strings of shredded cloth that the bird gets tangled in.
2. The bird picked out the stitching that holds the pieces together and made a long thread that way and got tangled in it.
3. The bird chewed a hole through the cloth and got its head stuck in it.
4. The bird ate the fuzz or cloth and died of crop impaction from the fibers.
5. A toenail got caught in the cloth or the stitching and the bird was injured trying to pull free.

This website has some reports: http://www.pine4parrots.co.uk/Pages/Hap ... rning.aspx

If you want to use any kind of fabric, the safest thing would be to only have it in the cage when you're in the room and will know if there's a problem.

So i can't use felt for the happy hut either? How would they get hurt from felt?

They could chew a hole through it and get stuck, or they could eat it and get impacted.
