I was looking at flight suits online, and I was looking at the sizes, to see what Lucy would need, and there was a bit of confusion.

There were three listings for cockatiel. One was just "cockatiel", which required a medium, and one which was for cockatiels 6 months or younger, when required a small. Those made sense to me, but what confused me was one that said "Cockatiel (Australian)", which also required a small.

I know the species is native to australia, but what the heck is an Australian Cockatiel? Is it the natural grey coloring? What does it have to do with the size? Wouldn't any cockatiel be considered an "Australian Cockatiel?"

If anyone could explain to me the difference, that would be most helpful. :)

Theres only one size for tiels in harnesses and thats petite but bigger tiels like my two get X-small and the flightsuit Australian cockatiel is a normal grey you should get a size small I got medium for Rocko and it was too big so I had to get it stitched to fit.

That also confused me. I got a medium for my cockatiels and I noticed it was a little big on them. However, the medium fits perfectly on my sun conure.

I don't know about the cockatiel Australian though. I did try looking it up and I only got results for cockatiels. It doesn't make sense to me either.

This is just a guess so it might be wrong. But cockatiel show breeders in the US and elsewhere go for size, and maybe they don't do this in Australia. The show breeders keep their best chicks and sell the rest, so the genes for bigness get spread through the general cockatiel population. Some of those show cockatiels weigh twice as much as an ordinary tiel. Maybe the average cockatiel in Australia is smaller than the average cockatiel in other places, just as the natural form of budgies is smaller than the English budgie.

Yes Parrotwhisperer, I know that the grey coloring is a cockatiel's natural coloring. But what does it have to do with the size? That's what I'm asking.

Because for "Cockatiel" alone, it's listed as medium. But for "Cockatiel (Australian)", it's listed as small. Why have a separate size listing, if the only difference is the color?

I think I might send them an email asking about this. I was thinking that it could be a cockatiel born directly from a pair of wild ones (like an orphaned rescue baby, or something), because I've noticed that wild ones look a little slimmer, but that could just be because we keep ours so well fed.

Hmm... I don't know. I know in horses there's an australian saddle and it's kind of a cross between a western and english saddle. Maybe it's something like that?

I think they have it all wrong because I got Rocko a medium and it was very big on him so I stitched it to fit so I have to get him a size small from now on maybe the Australian Cockatiel is for people from Australia that Rescued a wild baby or something idk.
