I have a total of 6 girls and 7 boys, so I'm a hen short in any case. The only other hen I have that could be classified as single is Snowy - she's paired up with Vlad who doesn't know how to mate. I don't want to break Vlad's heart by taking away both of his mates, and he likes Snowy better than Mims. Plus Snowy is the sister of Henry and Squeebis, so the odds are high for another incest pairing if I put her in there. Snowy has a prominent bald spot and had angel wing as a baby for no known reason, so she's not the strongest candidate for breeding anyway.

Wow that looks amazing.
Also whats angel wing?

I screwed the pieces together, then added metal 'mending plates' to reinforce the connection. I like screws better than nails because you can take it apart if you want to without tearing everything up.

This is the aviary here, but I used fairly similar construction on it. You can see the use of metal plates pretty clearly:

It's a weakness in the "wrist" joint that makes it stick out at a funny angle. It's easy to treat if you deal with it right away and her wing is perfect now. But this is what she looked like before treatment:

Thank you for posting the additional pictures, Carolyn. I like how you made the joints. Maybe I could do that on a shelf unit I would like to build.

It's starting to get interesting now. I waited a while to give them time to get used to the new birdroom, and gave them extra hours of light to help them get in the mood. Then yesterday I put a nestbox in the new birdroom. Today Henry started courting Mims. She has mixed feelings about it, and can't quite decide whether she should whack him in the head or take him up on it. But he's always been VERY persistent about courting a hen, and she's always been the horniest hen in the house. There's a good chance that they'll get together.

the door looks amazing! is it not on real hinges, which means that instead of really opening it, you have to remove it and then to put back if you want to come in?
Do they flock call those who are separated?
my concern is that if I limited birds to one room, then I wouldn't be around them often enough. DO you have no problems with it? Do your birds spend time in the bird rooms only?

Yes, it's hardware cloth washed with vinegar. The door in the new bird room is on real hinges. I took the original door off and attached the new one to the hinges that were already there. When I'm done using this room as a bird room I'll put the old door back on.

There was a lot of flock calling in the beginning but then they got used to being apart and don't do it very much. They spend most of their time in the bird room but I visit them frequently. One advantage of having a screen door instead of a solid door is that I can see them very easily, and talk to them whenever I pass by.
