I covered the cord on mine too. The adult birds aren't interested in landing on the light, but whenever I have fledglings they like to sit on it and chew on stuff. I use sheets of newspaper to cover up their landing area (making sure that none of it comes close to the bulb), which makes it too slippery for them to land successfully.
