There's nothing wrong with her. She's a cockatiel, and a cockatiel's favorite hobby is making more cockatiels. It's just the way they are, and it's up to us to rein them in for their own safety and well-being. They can't breed all the time in the wild because the conditions frequently aren't favorable. But living in captivity is nice and cushy, and a lot of tiels will breed nonstop if we don't prevent them from it.

I didn't really mean that there was something wrong with her lol

I was just confused since she has her own nest with 5 eggs in there and one inside her, and I bet there will be more in her after that egg. And what she does to help me is to try to mate. Bio is very smart and just ignored her. The dummy eggs work for him but Marshmallow is like Tella (wow that's such a cute name)

I've only tried the "flood them with eggs" trick on Shodu and Teela, and it didn't work on either one of them. I don't think cockatiels can actually count, but I think some hens might have a feel for how many eggs they've laid and know whether it's enough or not. If they feel like they've laid a lot but don't see a lot because someone's been taking them, they'll keep going. If they see a lot but don't feel like they've laid a lot, they keep going. It's only when they see a lot AND feel like they've laid enough that they stop.

Then there's Shodu, who's programmed for a specific number. She stops after she's laid exactly five eggs in a nest, whether the number that she sees is more or less than that. Eggs that are laid without some kind of nest don't count.

Now you all have me thinking--When do I need to start thinking about Bitsy and Roscoe having another clutch? Actually I really mean when will they start thinking they will have another clutch? I didn't expect this one and it might be best to wait for another one or is it best to let them have another clutch, and then go into "no more" routine?

It varies from pair to pair. Buster and Shodu are very determined breeders who start showing interest in a new clutch when the oldest baby in their current clutch is about three weeks old. And it's too late to stop them at that point. Hormone control has to be used carefully and lightly because I don't want their hormone levels to go down so much that they stop taking care of their current babies. But I discovered last year that if I start using a very light version of the long nights treatment when the oldest baby is two weeks old, it works - they finish out the current clutch and don't start a new one. I use a night length of 11 hours at a time when the natural nights are shorter than that. This makes it seem like fall is approaching since the days have started getting shorter, so it's not a good time to make more babies.

Hannah, have you taken the nest away? You said the baby has already fledged, so it's best to get rid of the nest before the parents decide they want another clutch.

Yes, the nest is gone. Baruch, I don't think my birds wanted another clutch. They scream if I take the baby away, and preen it often. If I hold the baby, the mother will fly to me to be with the baby. Its so sweet! When I sell the baby, will the parents miss it? Are birds know to have attachment to their babies?
