Parent birds are very attached to their babies until the babies are weaned. After that they lose interest, and the baby doesn't mean any more to them than any other member of the flock. It's kind of sad in a way, but it does mean that the parents won't be terribly upset when the baby leaves, so it makes it easier for everyone.
