Well, I don't believe in ghosts so I'm going to say that isn't what they're doing. It's more likely that they're waiting to see what you are going to do.
There might be a flattering reason that they're noisier when you're there. They feel safer and happier when you're with them, because they consider you to be a member of their flock. When you're with them they feel more free to do whatever they want, which unfortunately includes some naughty behavior. They might even have figured out that you pay attention to them when they misbehave so they're misbehaving to get your attention. You can correct that problem by paying attention to them when they're being nice and ignoring the bad behavior as much as you can.
