That was a picture of my baby 2 days ago.

It wasn't the moms fault at all. Unless you tried to assist the egg before the chick fully absorb the yolk and blood , the parents probably got anxious when the chick started vocalizing and tried to help it out.

In case this happens again, you need to take out the shell and membrane that's covering the chicks beak, noes, and both eyes. Then, put the chick in an incubator at 99F I am not sure what that is in celsius. Then, put a damp cloth under the egg to keep it humid , and with a wet Q-tip, wet the membrane every 15 minutes. If you see the chick is getting dehydrated, take a Q-tip with coconut water, and let the chick use it's tong to push it in its throat. Don't feed it any other way or else it will aspirate.

When drawing in the blood, you will hear a softer chirp, with very little body movement except for the beak and head. Once the chick starts to draw in the yolk, the vocalizing changes to a sharper louder frantic series of sharp quick chirps. Once the vocalizing changes let that membrane stay dry on the chick

The chick should come on its own but if you see the chick is trying to free it's leg, it means the membrane is straining him and you need to free him from the membrane, the chick will then come out on its own.

This is all from personal experience

My sister was so excited about the chicks that when she heard the egg pipping, she tried to get it out. I finally got the truth out of her, but who knows? She's only 5.

It's okay, she is only five. My 10 year old cousin gets overly excited. She keeps bugging me to open the best lid when they try to feel the chicks...but she stopped when Marshmallow and Bio jumped at her

As Baruch said, the baby might have been trapped in the shell. What is the humidity like in your area? Low humidity is a major cause of hatch problems.

Susanne Russo is the biggest expert on assist hatches that I know. She has a detailed article on it at http://www.internationalcockatielresour ... dated.html Assisting a hatch is delicate work, you can't just crack the shell open and take the baby out. So unfortunately it's possible that your little sister accidentally did some damage. You need to tell her that it's very important to leave the eggs alone while they're hatching.

You might want to join Susanne's Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/ICR.unite/ If you have any hatch problems, you can get personalized help from her there (as long as she's online at the time). She helped Baruch with the assisted hatch of his chick, and she's helped many other people too.

P.S. Most people on bird forums are very sympathetic to problems, because bad things can happen to any of us and sometimes it's our own fault. That's just the nature of life. If anybody on this board was rude or nasty to someone with a problem, they'd get a visit from Vlad the Enforcer.
