Hello everybody! My first nest hatched on march 20th. 3 Budgies out of 4 (from 5 eggs) survived. Now that the little ones are big enough to be taken away from the parents I would like to be sure about the gender. (I'd like to keep a female)

Here are some pictures of the 3 budgies:

It's my first time to sex birds, but as far as my knowledge goes I'd put my money on 2 males and 1 female. The yellow one in the middle (of picture with all three) is the female. Tell me I passed the test plz!

Thx in advance!

EDIT: moved the pictures into an album, sorry Tielfan that moving around broke your post now, but I fixed mine (I hope)

Here's the pictures again. With photobucket, they have some "share links" addresses next to the picture. It works best to copy the bottom one that says IMG, and paste it without adding any other tags to it.

You're correct, 2 cocks and a hen.

The bird in the middle is a lutino. This is a sex-linked mutation, and if the mother is NOT this color then the baby is definitely a girl. If the mother IS this color the baby could be either sex.

The blue and white bird is a blue pied. It looks like it's also clearwing or greywing. The green one is also clearwing or greywing; I'm not an expert on budgie mutations so I'm not sure whether it has any other mutations or not. These are not sex-linked colors and don't give us any clues about the baby's gender.

Using cere color to tell the sex of a young budgie is tricky and I'm not good at it lol. Boys tend to look more pink and girls tend to look more blue, but both of these birds look purple to me so I'm not sure. It does seem like the blue pied's cere might look more pink so I lean toward boy with this one. I'm not sure at all about the green one, but maybe the color looks more distinct in person.

Thx for the replies!

I have no Idea how genetics work (or even what colors/mutations exist).

If you guys want I can take some more pics and include the father (must be lutino judging by tielfan's post :) ) who I named banana and the mother who I call Tropicana. It's the lutino dad that was sold to me as a hen (see my 'new member' post).

Any way to be sure about the other 2
The first post by bluekeet made me cheer for myself, but Tielfan put some doubts back in my mind :-)

:thanks: again!

I'm not good with budgies genetics and sexing either. They are beautiful birds and I'm glad you joined our group.

I'm pretty good at sexing budgies, but I know next to nothing on advanced budgie genetics. I understand cockatiel genetics more.

Thank you again Bluekeet!

I'm going with your judgment on the gender!

This means the two males will be put up for sale, but there's no rush.

Then in 2017 I'll look for a suitable mate for Little Lemon. Might be this guy Mr. Green:

But we're not 2017 yet :joker:

You've got a lot of time to decide. We're only halfway through 2015.

He's a pretty olive green.
