These two have been in their own cage for about seven months now. They tend to go places together, but are not particularly affectionate to each other. Emma will bend her head to try to get Silver to scritch her head, but he wouldn't.

Today, I noticed Emma in the "scritch my head position" and then I saw Silver put one leg onto her back. This happened twice. I am wondering if this is a start of mating behavior between them.

I don't want the to breed, but it's interesting to watch their behavior and try to figure it out.

By the way, when I go over to talk to the budgies (they are in the cage), Silver will either fly over to my shoulder or, if he's in the cage, will chirp for me to give him attention. I love how he's jealous of the time I spend with other birds.

Yes that's definitely mating behavior. He hasn't quite figured out what he's supposed to do but it will probably come to him eventually lol.

Thank you, Carolyn. It's nice to know that my observation is correct. I do find watching behavior develop so interesting.

I am thinking that, if they do produce fertile eggs, I might allow two of them to hatch and boil the rest. I think I might be able to cope with two babies and find homes for them. I also think I would love observing the whole process.

If it reaches the point where there's actual mating you can put up a nestbox to encourage them.

You'll love the entire breeding process. I must warn you, you might love the chicks so much that you will end up keeping them. Chicks are super adorable.
