I've had this question for a while now, ¿How are parrots different from parakeets? I would say the size, but again, there are rosellas, Princess of Wales, golden parakeets, etc, etc.

Is it just a name? Or a specific ability between the two?

I would really like to know, I'm just curious.

Parakeets are parrots. It's basically just a name to describe a smaller parrot that has a more slender body, and (usually) a long tail (and usually a smaller beak in comparison to it's head. It's not really a scientific name of any kind.

cockatiels are not usually described as parakeets, possibly because they're they're already classified as cockatoos.

Though for a while, scientists couldn't figure out if a cockatiel was a type of cockatoo, or grass parakeet, because they bare resemblance to both types of birds. Eventually, DNA tests were done to prove that cockatiels are biologically related to cockatoos.

So I guess it's just based on perspective, when it comes to the cockatiel.

Cockatiels generally aren't considered to be parakeets because they're members of the cockatoo family. The biggest division in the parrot family is between the cockatoos and the "true" parrots, and the birds called parakeets are all classified as true parrots. Macaws aren't called parakeets either, and my guess is that it's simply because they're so big. Apart from that they're pretty much parakeet-shaped.

Dweezil could be called a princess parrot or a princess parakeet - both names are used frequently.

Oh, I really thought that they were supposed to be very different, but, huh. It's so weird. Thanks.

All parakeets are parrots but not all parrots are parakeets. A parakeet is a small to medium sized hook bill bird with a long tail. Love birds and parrotlets can't be classified as a parakeet even though they are small because they don't have the long tails but conures, cockatiels, and ringnecks can because they have the hooked beak, and long tail. Macaws aren't parakeets because they are large. I hope that makes sense.
