Sad to announce I found a dead chick today. Guess the threesome isn't working out very well...

Still, I very much believe in 'survival of the fittest'. I'm hoping the rest grow up ok.

On a happier note I tried a foot ring on the biggest Chick today. It might be a day (or two) to early. (It might come off) But we'll see if it does, we'll put it back on! (if we can find it again, if not he'll be number 002 instead of 001)

Typing this I'm hoping 007 is a boy so I can call him James :bigsmile100:

It's possible that the death didn't have anything to do with the quality of the parents. Some chicks just aren't meant to survive.

If #7 is a girl, you can always save that band for later, give it to the 7th boy and name him James. Of course you'd have to be able to figure out the sex of the chicks by the time you band them, which might not be possible. But it's easy to tell the sex of the babies when the father has a sex-linked mutation and the mother doesn't, so if you have a pair like that they might give you what you want. My eighth chick was a girl, but my eighth boy was named Henry.

I sing the old Herman's Hermits song to him, with modified lyrics:
phpBB [video]

"He's Enery the Eighth he am
Enery the Eighth he am he am
He was born in the birdcage next door
Seven male chicks were born there before
But none of them was an Enery (Enery!)
Though we had Pip and Quilliam (Quilliam!)
He's our eighth male chick he's Enery
Enery the Eigth he am he am
Enery the Eigth he am
(repeat, because second verse same as the first)
H-E-N-R-Y
Enery
Enery
Enery the Eigth he am he am
Enery the Eigth he am

I sing that song several times a week while playing with Henry because it's so funny. What makes it really hilarious is the difference between the pronunciation and spelling of the name. You sing "Enery" but spell "Henry".
