As I have 3 male cockatiels that look normal grey. I'm hoping I have some 'pure greys'.

Ed isn't one. Since his mom is Babbel and his dad is Pumba. As I see it with my noob-view on genetics. He's got to much of everything to be something. Ed's the trashbin of genetics :bigsmile100:

So there's some hope that Stattler and/or Waldorf are pure grey.

One of them is trying to reproduce with Janice. (In my notes I have her as cinammon-pearl-whiteface for some reason - u guys are the reason - well - mostly you Caro *wink wink*)
IF (and only then) dad is a pure grey... That would mean all the chicks come out looking like normal greys right?

I hope I got the genetecs down so far as to 'know' that the 'wild grey' is dominant over all else.
But after that I'm lost. I'm sure boys will be the biggest mess in genetic code to sort out, since the girls get the sex-linked genes from dad. And the boys get them from both parents.
So am I looking at this the right way if I put up this statement:
I'll have to wait for the female chicks to show their colors to see what dad is split to?
Or is there some way I can be sure from a cock : this must be dad's genes...

I'm going to stop here, cause I'm hurting my own head...

Don't worry about it. I'm having trouble keeping up with the info I find on the internet. I'm reading something, go : 'oh, it works like that!' and then three sentences down I forgot already...

Pure normal greys with no splits to any other mutation are very rare, and all your boys have probably got some splits. Some show breeders are developing their own lines of pure normal greys so they can pair them with their rare mutations, and improve the quality of the rares without bringing unwanted other mutations into the line.

That's why I'm hoping I have one, even though the chances are slim.

Last week I was a happy bunny. I spotted a chick with white down. Two days after there were two. The day after that, both of em died... I'm blaming the parents not feeding them propperly. They've got another chick now, yellow down. Hope they get the hang of it this time.

So, I'm not a happy bunny now. I was really looking forward for more whitefaces in my flock.

Some parents take time to learn. If the third chick survives it means they've gotten the message, and hopefully you'll have better luck from now on.

Can't force anything, I know. But it saddens me still to see chicks die.

@Jan: All it takes is time. Daily checking of the nests and recording everything in a logbook is the only extra thing you have to do. Refreshing water and food is something you do even if you don't breed so.
You can choose not to ring the chicks, but I don't know how to tell them appart if I don't later on.

Do you know what the problem is? Are you checking to see if the chicks have food in the crop? Or is it possible that they're getting chilled? Those are the two most likely problems. If you know what's going wrong you may be able to fix it. If the parents aren't feeding the babies, you can feed them yourself and put them back in the nest. The parents might get the idea in a few days. If they're getting chilled you can look for a way to keep the nest warmer, like maybe putting a heating pad on it.
