During the day Mrs Trilly enjoys her free time out with the other tiels, while hubby Frank is sitting on the eggs.
That doesn't mean that she loosens her vigilance!
Every time I (or other birds) get near the nest this is what she does. She can hold that position for a very very long time, not moving one millimeter... I find it very touching, the way these bird moms defend their little eggs.

Even the tail is fanned. She means business.

Jan, she stays still like that for ages! If you notice, in that position she is able to almost completely cover the nestbox top... I really need to either find the roof top or make one as I have been suggested earlier. I guess all that open space might make the parents a bit paranoid.

Oh my, yes she does! She has never bit me but I tried to go near her with a (very long) stick and she didn't even make a warning sound, just went for it!

I was wondering, is this egg season or almost everyone here is expecting babies by coincidence???

It's egg season lol. My guys start wanting to breed in February but I don't let them do it until late April or early May. I think the hormones are rising because the days are getting longer.

Maybe you can try putting a towel on top of the box? The only provoke is if they sit on it.

Is the nest box inside the cage? It must be hard to check on the babies without them attacking

A piece of cardboard would work pretty well. Tack it down at one end and put a crease in it to work like a hinge, and you can lift up the free end when you want to look in the nest.

Yes it is a bit of a pain. What I do is I wait for her to get out. With only Frank inside I move the box closer to me so that I can see inside. He is less aggressive. She immediately comes and tries to scare me away, but since Keith always sits on my head she ends up chasing him... While she is on Keith's pursue I can check undisturbed :D
