Beautiful birds!
I was confused at Petco, they have birds who look exactly like budgies, but the tag says Parakeet. Is budgie one of parakeet varieties, right?

No no, Chipper. "Parakeets" at pet stores are all budgerigars. The rest of the world calls them budgies, but America is the only place that incorrectly calls them parakeets. "Parakeet" is a broad term that means "bird with long, flat tail". There are many kinds of different parakeets, including budgies, indian ringnecks, bourkes, alexandrines, princess of wales... They all belong to the parakeet family, but really the little parakeets at the pet stores are budgies.

And there are 2 different kinds of budgies, the american budgie, which are the small ones you see at the pet stores, and then there's english budgies, which are what Jan's are. They're much more poofy.

They look so happy together! And so pretty too.

All budgies are parakeets but not all parakeets are budgies. The official species name for budgies is shell parakeet but basically nobody calls them that and I bet a lot of people have never even heard that name. There are lots of other parakeet species too, for example Indian ringnecks are parakeets.
