Thank you! I never actually expected lutinos, I didn't know the cock was split  The hen is straight up cinnamon and the cock is a cinnamon pearl pied (and as we have now discovered split to lutino). My favourite mutations are the white faced so they'll be what I'm hoping to get hold of next

I 'm hoping to get Pied and whitefaced birds mostly. I don't mind the Pearls (that some of mine have). But dropping in a Lutino would make my head spin even more than it already is. I didn't even know you could have a split for lutino without it being visual in the cock! (even though I should know cause I use a calculator now and again where all the options are shown...)

Don't worry Bob, the inheritance rules for lutino are the same as the rules for cinnamon and pearl. The sex-linked inheritance rules are hard to learn, but once you wrap your mind around them it works the same way for all three of these mutations (and also for sex-linked yellow cheek, which most of us will never work with).

The basics: Boys can be split but girls can't. Girls can only get the gene from their father, and if they get it from him they will be visual. Boys have to get the gene from both parents to be visual, and if they get the gene from only one parent they'll be split. There are more details at http://www.littlefeatheredbuddies.com/i ... inked.html

That's a great way to explain it! I feel like that should be the summary at the end of the article!

The article already has this for a summary, but I can add the other stuff:

Quote:
Here's a quick and simple way to remember how it works: to get a male who is visual for a sex-linked mutation you must have a mother who is visual for that mutation. If you have a baby with a sex-linked mutation and the mother is NOT visual for that mutation, the baby has to be female. If the mother IS visual for that mutation then the baby can be either male or female.

The father has to be either visual or split to a sex-linked mutation in order to get any babies who are visual for that mutation. If the father doesn't have the gene then you can't get any visual babies no matter what color the mother is.
