There are a lot of different species and each one has their own set of typical characteristics. Some of them can be very loud, like the Patagonian and the Sun. Patagonians tend to have lovely personalities though and I've been sort of wanting one for decades.

The only direct conure experience I have was babysitting a pineapple green cheek for a couple of months. He was a fun bird with very different behavior from a cockatiel. He was a little nippy though and liked to bite my fingers. I didn't let him near the cockatiels; he actually weighed a little less than they do but he had a much bigger beak, and I was afraid he'd hurt them.

This is how he liked to take a bath. Looks more like a squid than a bird IMO.

My favorite bird is a blue crown conure. I was playing with one at The Bird Shop today. He was a little shy, but he warms up once you get to know him. I would love one, but they are one of the LOUD conures. And they are very nippy and can bite quite hard. I'd say a parrotlet and a GGC have about the same bite intensity. A blue crown conure is huge. Therefore, they got a big ol' beak on them and that means a harder bite.

But, on a positive note, my favorite thing about conures is that they will flop onto their backs and wrestle with you like a puppy. You will get a few "play bites", but I can assure you, even those can hurt. However, a few nips don't have anything on the loyal devotion they can give you. Oh and yes, they love to play. With anything. They really like their toys and go hard on them. They will take a beating, so you would need some good things for them to hold and chew.

They are tiny birds with a huge personality. Personally I would never mix them with other small parrots, based on my short experience with them. They are pretty entertaining though, no doubt about it.

A beautiful bird.. but Id not mix them with other birds... its advised either on their own or 2 of the same sex for company... another thing to remember, they live for many years usually.

A pineapple GCC looks like the picture tielfan posted. It's reaching up to the pricey side, the ones here are usually around $300.

I have been wanting a turquoise green cheek conure. They are supposed to be one of the quieter conures. But sometimes I think they couldn't be noisier than my three cockatiels when they hear me come in the door when I have been gone or first thing in the morning when they want out of their cage or when they decide to do heart wings and court the female. OMG then they are loud!!

Recently I have been going to a bird store that is about 1 hr from me and I get to play with the birds. They will let you hold one if you wash your hands and but on a smock. What fun!

The store says they ( conure) are a better pet for children than some of the other birds.

"Pineapple" is what they call a green cheek conure who has the cinnamon mutation and is also the yellow morph (which is actually natural).

There's a turquoise green cheek conure in the forum banner, just to the right of the blue budgie in the center. This is probably a parblue mutation (partial blue) but I haven't actually looked it up.

I don't think they are better birds for children unless the "other birds" the shop people are talking about are amazons or cockatoos. Conures are nippy and their beak is quite powerful.
Maroon bellied conures are supposed to be quieter than others, still I remember my ears RINGING when the two I had started screeching... they had a lot of fun yelling suddenly so that all the cockatiels would start flying in panic.
The conure noise quality is just something else
