Alright, so, umm. Yep. I've been AWOL for a bit. Like I said, a lot of nice things going on. And college. :fit: But, I did happen to come across something very interesting. I'm sorry you're about to hear this again, but it is BCC related. On a northern California parrot rescue group on Facebook, I found this little girl:

She's an 8 year old BCC and she is not just posing. She has a very noticeable head tilt. I've contacted the owner. She said that she is extremely quiet for a conure, doesn't talk too much, tame and eats, drinks and preens just as a normal bird. Apparently she was hatched like this. She has been to an avian vet several times and checked out healthy and sound each time. She said vets couldn't do anything, but also said that it doesn't seem to bother her, however, the eye on the underside isn't all that great.

One, I am very interested in her, and two, is there a name for her condition, or a fix for it?

Her condition is called "torticollis". It's caused by multiple things, and some birds do hatch this way. Common names include "stargazing" amd "twirling".

It's odd to hear that she's doing so well despite having it. It disorients them, and they have trouble moving around, finding food and water, and keeping balance.

If she hatched that way, chances are it was poor egg placement.

Here's a page on it: https://www.beautyofbirds.com/stargazing.html
I read quite a bit of information about it when considering on adopting a dove from an out of state rescue, with the same condition (though no one could figure out the cause).

It says if not corrected, the end result is death. She's been this way for 8 years. Would she be a bad idea for me or could I fix it?

There are multiple ways to fix it, though if the treatment options on that page have been used already, then it may have to be a little more complicated.

Here are a couple of links on the story of the dove I mentioned adopting, and the treatment that was done to help her. She had a more trouble than the conure from what it sounds like though, so you can adjust it accordingly.

The "resulting in death" part usually refers to if they can't feed themselves. I think she would be fine, but trying to fix it would be a good idea, rather than leaving it be. Better to fix it before it gets worse, right?

Oh wow, that is much worse than her. I am completely up for a special needs bird, and I would definitely try and correct her, but would this be bad for me to get invested in? I just tend to get a little emotionally attached to my little guys, and I just don't know if I want to see her get a bad ending if it isn't corrected.

The fixability of it will depend on the cause. Here's a link where they found that a parasite might be the cause: http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/gue ... discovery/ It seems unlikely that indoor birds would have this parasite though. There was also a viral disease that was suspected as the cause but turned out not to be the reason for it.

Since she's been this way for 8 years she probably isn't in imminent danger of dropping dead. She's obviously learned to cope with it.

That's really sad. Everyone is saying that she managed to live for 8 years now that way, so she's really learnt to live with it. Though you can try fixing the problem if that is what you want, and of course if you can.

Why not speak to an Avian vet with all the details and see what he would advise before deciding
Its a lot to take on and you'd need plenty of time..
