It's a first person story when it's told from the "I" point of view, regardless of whether anyone actually said all those things or not. When the person who's really writing the story is different from the one who's supposedly telling the story, they're just using their creative imagination to tell it as if they were the other person or animal.

Thank you so much for your comments. Part of my motive in writing this story was to try to get a better understanding of Emma. I feel it did that.
So often it is said that you need to meet the bird where they are comfortable. If I respect Emma's boundaries, our relationship improves. If I try to force her into something she doesn't want, I pay for it with considerable periods of her wanting nothing to do with me.
